Session 3

Session 3 fused the previous workshop elements of performance and text with a new focus on ‘instruction as art’.  A simple set of multiple-choice options provided the framework within which the students created a personalised placard, (Bob and Roberta Smith style). The guidelines implied that there would be specific limitations in the production process. Each student explored the potential of these limitations through a unique interpretation of the language used in the instructions.

The words from last week’s word-association exercise were applied to each of the placards.

The second half of the session put emphasis on sound, with a performative interpretation of the commands. The recorded footage of the performances provides further research material, which will be developed in future sessions.

Session 2

Remember to click on the tabs under the banner to view the artist references from each session!

Session 2 involved a conceptual engagement with the activities from the previous Dodgeball tournament. Using the simple systemic formula from the game word association, the students were encouraged to respond to the word 'dodgeball'. The responses were recorded as above. This activity was performed twice, first as an instantaneous reaction, secondly as a response to the images documenting the Dodgeball tournament.

Print outs containing imargery from the marks made in the previous session were used as a template for cutting the letters out.

The words, selected by the students were realised and a short 'Beat poetry' session ensued. These words will be incorporated into sculptural signs in next weeks session.

We also managed to squeeze in a visit to the DAC Beachcroft law firm to meet the team who are involved in initiating this project. The students were able to see where the art work produced with BRISTOL DIVING SCHOOL may end up. This is important to consider during each workshop, as the working environment is very different between the two spaces. There is an array of potential spaces the work could be displayed, and this will affect how the work functions. This will be an ongoing process of refinement as we develop a better understanding of the artwork produced over the 7 weeks.

Session 1

Yesterday we said a warm welcome to everyone in the exceptionally warm October sun.
Introducing ourselves as BRISTOL DIVING SCHOOL, we chose to contextualise our geographic location and history with the site by visiting the UWE  Fine Art  and Art & Visual Culture studios as well as a brief introduction to the BDS project at large.
The latter part of the workshop was dedicated to a conceptualised art-sports tournament of dodge ball meets mark-making.
This was an icebreaker/performance event as well as an introduction into the different ways art is made and disseminated. The activity was filmed from a stationary camera, with the intention to edit the footage as an artwork in a later session.
Check out our photos and artists references to for this session:

The marks made from this activity shall determine the aesthetical properties of the artworks produced in Session 2. The students will also be encouraged to engage with the session through language; their reinterpretation of the event and the study of words used to describe the experience.
