Session 7

Curatorial References from Session 7

In contemporary art, the role of the curator is to select, understand and interpret artworks. The meaning of art, or how it is perceived can be very subjective, (influenced by the unique personal opinions, tastes and feelings of the individual). The curator, therefore, can be very creative in the way in which he or she arranges or combines different pieces of art, lights the art, or exhibits it in different locations. Like the artist, the curator has to make considered choices in how to present the work, thus creating or highlighting new possibilities in understanding it. Nowadays curation is an artistic branch in its own right and exists as a defined career path and course that can be studied at university.

Session 7 set out to curate the artworks in the BRISTOL DIVING SCHOOL, a very specific kind of site with its own unique details and qualities. Images of previous exhibitions shown at the BDS were introduced during this session in order to present the various different ways in which the same sight can be experienced.

Eastside Projects

A further study of curation was introduced in the form of Eastside Projects. This artist-run space, based in Birmingham, utilises a unique approach in the presentation of the art space, artworks and events. With each new exhibition, remnants of previously shown works remain in the space, creating intertwined, complex and experimental layerings of meaning. The reading of the gallery and its contents continuously changes, based on what has been and what is still to come. Our approach to the WORKSHOP exhibition has echoed this way of working, by consciously using the outcomes of each individual session to inform the progression of the program.
